HOME > THE CHARMS OF YANAI
Yanai City is a port town in the east of Yamaguchi Prefecture, located at the base of Murotsu Peninsula, facing the Seto Inland Sea. Blessed with the longest average hours of sunlight in Japan, this is a very pleasant area with a mild climate and lush green nature. Its port has played a key role in sea traffic throughout history – during the Kofun (5th-6th centuries), Gempei War (11th – 12th centuries) and Edo (17th – 19th centuries) eras as well as during Japan’s westernization period in the early 19th century.
During the Edo period, thanks to its flourishing trade and commerce, this area was called “the warehouse of Iwakuni Clan”. The white-walled buildings and narrow streets of Yanai reflect the prosperity of those times and give strollers a sense of reminiscence. This is a travel guide to this charming little city.
